Cartagena lies on Colombia's northern coast along the Caribbean Sea. Colombia is located in Northern South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Panama and Venezuela, and bordering the North Pacific Ocean, between Ecuador and Panama.This city of 900,000 has almost 500 years of extraordinary history and is one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia.Cartagena had grown into a prosperous Spanish outpost due to exporting gold and other riches, and also was a trading port for ships making their way from Peru to Cuba, then sailing their bounty back to Spain. Following this Governor de Heredia prohibited building with materials other than bricks, roof tiles, stone masonry, and rocks.Cartagena's 500-hundred year-old coralstone forts and great parts of its walled city are admirably intact and represent some of the finest examples of civil and military architecture of the Spanish colonial times.
